The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) reported that over 4,500 sacks of garbage were collected during the cleanup of Manila Baywalk Dolomite Beach last September 17.

International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day 2022

In observance of International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day 2022, the DENR led the event where more than 4,000 volunteers took part in the cleanup of a 500-meter beach walk.

ICC Day is held annually every third Saturday of September. In celebration of ICC Day 2022, with the theme, “Fighting for Trash Free Seas-Pilipinas: Ending the Flow of Trash at the Source”, the DENR conducted one of their eight cleanup activities at the Dolomite Beach.

“Volunteers from government, private organizations, and private individuals came to the Baywalk’s coastline with their own garbage bags as well,” the DENR - Metropolitan Environmental Office (MEO) West OIC Director Rodelina de Villa said.

According to de Villa, 3,000 of the 4,500 sacks were provided by DENR Central Office, while 1,500 trash bags came from DENR – National Capital Region, which includes DENR – MEO West, and additional trash bags were sourced from participating national and local government and private organization.

She said the collected garbage consisted mostly of plastic wastes, dried water hyacinth, and marine debris.

Based on the data from DENR - MEO West, the cleanup activities held from July 12 to September 14, a total of 147,939 sacks of solid waste were collected including 83,109 sacks of water hyacinth and 2,224 sacks of marine debris.

Moreover, it was reported that another hundreds of sacks were collected from the coast of Manila Baywalk Dolomite Beach after the passage of Super Typhoon Karding.

Most of the garbage were sachets and plastic bottles. There were also slippers, toys, pieces of furnitures, and several face masks and syringe.

Last September 25, Karding made landfall as a super typhoon in Quezon province, Aurora, and parts of Central Luzon before exiting the country as a typhoon. However, parts of Metro Manila, Northern Luzon and Southern Luzon were also affected by its movement.

On the other hand, the DENR said that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has allocated at least P1.5 billion for the rehabilitation of Manila Bay in 2023.
